Where does kindness like this come from?

You've rolled the dice. You've laughed. You've shown kindness...

Here's a question worth asking together as a family: Why bother being kind?

For us at Beyond, the answer points back to one person — Jesus. He didn't just talk about kindness. He lived it, especially toward people the rest of the world didn't bother with.

Here are three short stories about Him. Read them at the dinner table, on the couch, or in the car. No pressure to "get it right" — just talk about what stands out.

The Story Jesus told about a stranger

(Read it in Luke 10:25–37 — The Good Samaritan)

A RECAP: Jesus once told a story about a man who got beaten up and left on the side of the road. Two religious people walked past him. They saw him. They kept walking.

Then a stranger came along — someone from a group everyone thought were the "wrong" kind of people. He stopped. He helped the man with his wounds, paid for him to stay somewhere safe, and made sure he was okay.

Jesus finished the story with a question: "Which one of those three was a good neighbour?"

The answer was obvious. The hero was the one who showed kindness — even when it cost him something.

Talk about it:

  • Why do you think the first two people walked past?
  • Has someone ever been kind to you when you really needed it? What did it feel like?
  • Is there someone we know who might need a kindness like that this week?

The day Jesus changed a man's whole life with kindness

(Read it in Luke 19:1–10 — Zacchaeus)

Zacchaeus was short, rich, and not very popular. He'd cheated a lot of people out of their money, and his whole town didn't like for it.

One day Jesus came through town. Zacchaeus wanted to see Him so badly he climbed a tree to get a look. When Jesus walked past, He looked up, called Zacchaeus by name, and said, "Come down — I'm coming to your house today."

Nobody else would have done that. Jesus did.

Zacchaeus had decided to give back everything he'd cheated people out of — and more. One act of kindness changed his whole life.

Talk about it:

  • Why do you think Jesus chose Zacchaeus, when everyone else avoided him?
  • Have you ever been surprised by someone being kind to you?
  • Could a small kindness from us change someone's day this week?

In both these stories, Jesus showed us what kindness looks like.

"Be kind to one another." — Ephesians 4:32

That's the heart of the Kindness Dare Dice. Every silly roll, every small act, is your family practising the way of Jesus.
